Tower tour of St. Marien

Tower tour of St. Marien

The 80-meter-high tower of St. Mary's Church is a landmark of the Hanseatic City of Wismar that can be seen from afar. Construction of the church began around 1270. During the Middle Ages, the tower served as a landmark for ships approaching Wismar. During the Second World War, St. Mary's Church was badly damaged in 1945 and then demolished down to the tower in 1960. Visitors can enjoy an impressive view over the city on regular tours of the tower. A 3D film presentation shows the origins and techniques of the Gothic brick building. The character Bruno Backstein vividly explains the path from clay, the building material of the church, to the firing of the shaped bricks and the masonry construction for all age groups.

The mighty 80-meter-high tower remains from St. Mary's, the former parish church. A landmark of Wismar that has been visible from afar on land and sea for centuries. Learn interesting facts about the history of the tower and the town on a guided tour at a height of 63 meters with an experienced guide.
