The Ohlsdorf Cemetery is a globally recognized work of art. An ensemble of tombs, sculptures and park design. An oasis of calm and at the same time a treasure chest of Hamburg history.
On this tour we pass the revolutionary monument of 1918, the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, the honor grove of the resistance fighters against the Nazi dictatorship, the blood beech area, the poet's corner and the old crematorium. Magnificent tombstones from different times testify to different burial cultures. It seems paradoxical: But nowhere else is the diversity and contradiction of Hamburg's history as vivid and clear as in this beautiful park, which was awarded a prize at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
But there are also odd things to be marveled at, such as the tomb of the "King of Albania" or a tombstone with a letter slot and the words "No advertising". After all, our tour should not be a funeral march.
It is very interesting to keep track of different burial cultures from recent history. We will also marvel at the graves of well-known Hamburgers, such as the graves of Henry Vahl, Gustaf Gründgens, Ida Ehre, Fritz Schumacher, Alfred Lichtwark or the family graves of the Hafenbeks.
